The "predominant" role of the Albanian organized crime in the field of drug trafficking has emerged over time from numerous police operations, some also conducted by the DIA74.

The modus operandi used - conclaimed now also judicially - sees such transnational criminal organizations transported from Albanian literals on the Italian territory by means of powerful gums and sailing vessels, through the Otranto Canal, numerous migrants of various ethnicities (prevalently Iranians, Pakistani, Iraqi, Egyptian, Syrian and Afghani).
